Get Moving at Fancourt

Getting away on holiday isn’t just about soaking up as much rest and relaxation as possible – especially when you’ve been cooped up for months on end over lockdown! Use your getaway as an opportunity to rediscover nature, inhale the fresh country air and to get your body moving.

Six years ago, on the 10th of December 2014, Cabinet declared an annual National Recreation Day (NRD) on the first Friday of October each year – encouraging all South Africans to participate in recreational activities that will improve their health and wellbeing.

Should you be heading to the Garden Route this Friday, Fancourt has got everything that you need to find that delicate balance between winding down (the last few months have been stressful) and getting up and at ‘em!

  1. Take a leisurely walk along our scenic nature trails

Head out and admire our spectacular views – not to mention our beautiful gardens, water features and abundant trees, shrubs and flowers on the golf course. The Garden Route boasts a rich bird life, so keep your eyes peeled for the Knysna turaco (Knysna loerie)!

We have three gorgeous leisure trails for you to explore. Take a slow and gentle stroll along the     2.5 km path, opt for the 5 km trail, or challenge yourself with an invigorating 10 km hike.

If you’d prefer to paddle along the pathways instead, we have a variety of bicycles available at our leisure centre for both children and adults.

  1. Do some laps in the pool

The cool water on your skin is perfect on a warm spring day, particularly if you’ve been hard at work exploring the estate. Even better? The Poolside Café is now open, which means you can enjoy some time around the pool with a double-stack sandwich in hand!

  1. De-stress with a day of fishing

Fishing is associated with a number of health benefits, especially when it comes to stress. This is because it requires lots of focus and awareness, inevitably taking your mind off of any worries you may be experiencing.

Countless studies have demonstrated how fishing has the potential to reduce the levels of cortisol (known as the ‘stress hormone’) in your system. Never mind the fact that it promises a more intense workout than you might expect! Fishing is a low-impact exercise that works the muscles in your arms, legs, shoulders, back, and core, all the while enhancing your sense of balance. Do you really need any more reason to spend a day fishing for big-mouth black bass at one of our fishing dams? Didn’t think so!

*Note that fishing is on a catch-and-release basis only.

  1. Get competitive during a game of tennis

You’ll find four mountain-facing tennis courts on Fancourt’s grounds, two of which are floodlit to allow for gameplay even after you’ve enjoyed the stunning African sunset. It’s a great way in which to bond with your friends or relatives, all the while enjoying a healthy dose of competition. Forgot to bring your tennis racket along? No worries. There are plenty of tennis balls and rackets available at the leisure centre free of charge.

  1. Get pumped at the gym

As lockdown restrictions continue to ease, gyms have been given the green light to re-open, which means that you can pound that treadmill and pump that iron to your heart’s content once again!

We have an incredible personal trainer available if you need a bit of assistance when it comes to making the most of your workout, and our team will help you navigate the new health and safety regulations with ease.

  1. Let your cares float away in our heated Roman bath and jacuzzi

The Spa at Fancourt boasts a beautiful Roman Bath and jacuzzi. Currently undergoing refurbishment, it will reopen on 12 October 2020.

After an adventurous stay, be sure to savour the last moments of your holiday by floating calmly in the heated waters of the Roman bath. Drawing inspiration from ancient Roman traditions, these baths are maintained at a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius and filled with warm, ozone water for a blissful, detoxifying effect. Perfect for those who are sensitive to chlorine, the water is soft and gentle on your skin.

Whether you’ve chosen to vacation with the whole family or opted to explore the Garden Route and all of its wonders on your own (be sure to check out our current solo traveller special offer), there will always be an opportunity to put your health and fitness first when holidaying at Fancourt. That is, without sacrificing the relaxing, laid-back aspects of a memorable holiday in the process, of course!
