The Ernie Els Foundation was started in 1999 by Ernie Els as a way of giving back to the game and helping talented young South African golfers from families with limited resources. The Foundation had, as its three pillars: education, life skills and golf coaching/playing opportunities.

In 2005, the Ernie Els Foundation joined forces with Dr Hasso Plattner’s Fancourt Foundation to become the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation.  The three pillars remain, and the Foundation’s focus is on:

  • Encouraging young golfers to finish school and to study further post-school
  • Supporting promising young golfers to remain amateur for longer – preparing them for the professional game
  • Developing a new generation of young, educated leaders

A B-BBEE Level 1 contributor, the Foundation is funded by Ernie Els and Dr Plattner, with additional support from a number of loyal corporate partners and the R&A. Past notable members include the likes of major-winner Louis Oosthuizen, Branden Grace, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Toto Thimba, as well as several others who have gone on to win on the Sunshine Tour or have successful careers off the golf course in a wide variety of industries and professions.
