Sikelela Skills Development Centre
Sikelela Skills Development Centre is a job creation initiative of George Child Welfare, aiming to bring change in the lives of unemployed people through craft training. We also believe that the miracle of empowering people lies in creating an environment where people with limited opportunities can grow into self-sufficient designers and crafters.
Sikelela was established in 2006 to assist with the alleviation of poverty in the communities serviced by the organisation through the design, production, marketing and sale of the products.
The project trains and assists crafters from the area to become socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. In association with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and the Cape Craft and Design Institute, craft and basic business skills training are offered.
Crafters are not employed by Sikelela Skills Development Centre, but are provided with training, workstations & tools, raw materials, product development and access to markets.
Unique and beautifully made gifts, artworks, fashion and décor products are exhibited and sold at Sikelela’s retail store, on the corner of Albert and Merriman streets in George. Great organic coffee and a selection of tasty treats can be enjoyed at their little café.
